Woohoo, got myself a mini-road trip planned in 2 weeks. Work is flying me down to Mississippi to go do inspections on a guided missile destroyer at the Huntington Ingalls shipyard. The original plan was to fly in to New Orleans on Monday, fly out on Friday morning.
After hours of furious google mapping, flight and car rental checking, and number crunching, I came up with a plan: I’m going to pickup a rental at 6 AM on Friday morning when everyone else is flying out. Then drive 6 hours from New Orleans to Anniston, Alabama. Then drive 2 more hours and fly out of Atlanta. The best part is that the flight ends up costing the same, so work will cover everything, and the one way car rental, after some discounts, is going to be $10 + gas. And I just got my bosses OK for all of it.
So why am I doing this? To go to the CMP Headquarters in Anniston, Alabama to pick out my birthday present... a shiny “new” M1 Garand to use in service rifle competition. This is basically going to be the best work trip ever because it combines all the things I love - southern soul food, beer, warships, road trips, and shooting stuff.
I booked with National, chose a “standard” which they call a “Jetta or equivalent,” so I’m curious to see what I get.
